Intern Maya Horvath has been a great addition to the LW Lexington team. Maya is a rising sophomore at The University of Kentucky, where she studies Horticulture. She has displayed a positive attitude, passion for horticulture, and a willingness to learn throughout her time with LW. We are so glad we met Maya last spring at a UK Hort Club meeting and that she decided to intern with LW this summer!

How did you become interested in the green industry?

Around the beginning of high school, I began to be interested in permaculture and botany. Throughout the years, that grew into a desire to know more about fields related to horticulture and the environment. I really enjoy the fact that a lot of the green industry is centered in urban area, and there’s always a demand for the services within.

Why did you decide to intern with LW?

I decided to intern with Landscape Workshop after Sammy Shores, our Lexington General Manager, and Abby Wasson, one of our Account Managers, came to a Horticulture Club meeting to give a presentation about the company. It sounded like a great opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain hands on experience; so far I haven’t been disappointed!

What is a “typical” day like?

A typical day really depends on what crew you work with. When I was with the specialty garden crew, a lot of what we did was planting annual beds, trimming, and mulching. Right now, I’ve been with the irrigation crew, and we troubleshoot all day. We find the control, test the entire system, check for leaks and look for valves. Then, depending on what we need to do, we upgrade the control panel, rewire what’s inside the valve boxes, and dig up the pipes to repair the leak.

What have you enjoyed most in your internship so far?

I enjoyed working with the specialty garden crew because of the variety of the work we did, as well as annual bed design/installation.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned so far this summer?

Stay hydrated, keep your tools in good shape, work together because there’s loads to be done!

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

I would want the power of uninterrupted productivity to be able to achieve all my goals in the most efficient way.
