The Intern Files | Taylor Chavers

Welcome to the Summer Intern Files 2019! First up, we’re spotlighting Auburn student Taylor Chavers. Taylor has been a terrific addition to the Montgomery/Auburn team this summer. General Manager Matthew Capps describes him as “respectful, eager to learn, and willing to do what it takes to complete a task.” Taylor ends his internship with LW today to continue his studies in Auburn’s College of Architecture, Design, and Construction. How did you first become interested in the green industry?
I’ve always had an appreciation for nature and the outdoors, and after two years in engineering, I had an epiphany that I wanted to do something creative. I arrived at landscape architecture, which perfectly blended my appreciation for nature and my desire for creativity.

Why did you decide to intern with LW?
I wanted to learn more about the next steps after a landscape is designed- its installation and maintenance. I wanted to learn more about the realities of landscapes and their evolution over time so that I could become a better designer.

What is a “typical” day like?
I’ve split my time between Montgomery and Auburn, and each have been different. In Auburn, I’ve mostly been doing typical maintenance stuff: weed eating, edging, blowing, etc. In Montgomery, I moved around often, spending time with enhancements, flowers, irrigation, and maintenance.

What did you enjoy most in your internship?
I’ve enjoyed learning about planting trees and flowers, digging up grass and laying down new sod, laying irrigation pipes, and just getting to know everyone.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned so far this summer?
Never plant Elaeagnus in a design.

Share a fun fact about yourself.
I am from Evergreen, Alabama, which is officially recognized as “The Bigfoot capital of Alabama.”
