Landscape Design and Enhancements
Landscape Workshop is committed to meeting clients at every level of the landscaping process. For projects starting from the ground up, we match clients with an account manager who can best determine their needs and wants. A rendering, plan or layout is created following this step, and it may involve the services of our in-house landscaping architects or floriculturists.
Once the plan is set, installation begins. Landscape Workshop is proud to offer a wide-ranging selection for our installation services, as our crews install hardscape, water features, drainage systems, and much more. And if your need is not listed, reach out to see if a custom plan can be constructed for your unique problem.
Our enhancements, or upgrades, are optional additions to a landscape post-installation. These enhancements can vary from the replacement of dead plant material to seasonal color plans/rotations. No matter what the property may demand, Landscape Workshop is prepared to tackle it.
Irrigation Services
As a community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain, there are several irrigation concerns facing the town of Lynchburg. The city sees fairly consistent rainfall throughout the year, and the region experiences seasonal storms and dry periods. Drainage issues are notable here due to clay-rich soil, which tends to drain slower while compacting further—this can pose serious issues like oversaturation and root rot. Drainage issues are only compounded by the proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains, as rainwater flows downhill (cascade runoff) before collecting in flood-prone Lynchburg.
Landscape Workshop addresses these challenges through strategic drainage planning, including grading, re-sloping, and the installation of dry creek beds or channel drains. Our irrigation experts design systems that limit overwatering while improving water distribution to match the region’s rainfall patterns.

Common Landscaping Projects in Lynchburg, VA
Lynchburg, known as the “City of Seven Hills,” has long been a cultural and historical hub in central Virginia. Located just over an hour from Roanoke—about 56 miles—the city’s hilly terrain once posed a challenge but now adds to its charm. Today, with strong roots and steady growth, local businesses are turning to commercial landscaping to stand out and thrive in a modern landscape.
Downtown Landscaping
Lynchburg may be known for its stunning mountains and universities, but the downtown scene is no less stellar. The city features a host of things to do across its eight historic districts, like Garland Hill and Daniel’s hill. Each district comes with its own character and significance, and, almost as important, several shops and organizations taking advantage of commercial landscaping. Many of the streets are cobblestone, which requires maintenance to prevent shifting and erosion, and regular weed control and tree root management protect the street, sidewalk, and planting strips. Jefferson’s Poplar Forest and the Bluffwalk pedestrian zone are among the city’s many attractions, and Lynchburg’s Community Market is the oldest continuous market in Virginia—but the hardscapes will face much wear and tear from constant traffic. Where others may see problems, we see opportunities to fix them.
Landscaping for Small Businesses, Restaurants, and Retail Storefronts
But commercial landscaping in and around the City of Lynchburg is not limited to boutiques, hospitals, and universities, as Landscape Workshop provides services to businesses big and small. From the mom and pop to the local dive or box office store, we have the experience to tackle all three.
For big office stores, commercial landscaping may not seem like the most intuitive choice, but our services go far beyond seasonal color and tree maintenance. Larger properties, especially those with large parking lots, require regular maintenance to keep the grounds clean and presentable. This may manifest in several ways, such as power washing, leaf blowing, and weed removal. Lynchburg is home to many hardware and construction stores like Home Depot and Lowes, and both benefit from year-round landscaping that reflects the professionalism of their businesses. The type of professionalism that draws customers in before they ever walk through the door.
Locations like veterinarian clinics and the Humane Society appeal to a different demographic than the typical business. Aesthetics are not as important to dogs or cats, but a decent exterior can lure in their owners. Especially for businesses with green spaces in this industry, turf at veterinary clinics needs to be especially durable and easy to clean, as heavy foot traffic and pet waste can quickly degrade standard grass or low-grade synthetic options. These issues necessitate regular maintenance for the benefit of both health and visuals.
Landscaping for Liberty University and University of Lynchburg
When visiting prospective schools of higher education, students often say that they know the school they want to go with within minutes of visiting. Whether this is a matter of academic prowess or aesthetic value is debatable, but the impact of good visuals cannot be understated. From seasonal color rotations to regular grounds maintenance, Landscape Workshop works with these institutions to maximize every square foot of their property.
Liberty University, one of the largest private Christian universities anywhere, lies on the eastern edges of Lynchburg, but its influence stretches far beyond the campus. The extensive campus, around 7,000 acres, includes several walking paths, academic halls, eateries, and sports fields. One benefit of a large campus is the numerous green areas for recreation, and Liberty University utilizes gorgeous crepe myrtles to huge blooms and shade. But the glitter and gold come with requirements. In order to properly maintain a campus of this size, the property needs robust irrigation systems to compensate for the size, variety, and Virginia-related drainage issues. But a healthy landscape, like a good reputation, is hard to gain—and harder to maintain. That’s why institutions like Liberty turn to professional landscaping partners like Landscape Workshop to keep their grounds as impressive as their reputation.
West of Miller Park, the University of Lynchburg sits on a scenic, tree-rich campus centered around its beloved green space known as “The Dell.” With 77 buildings, including academic halls, residence facilities, and athletic amenities like tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and a clay running track, the university offers a welcoming environment for learning and leisure alike. Hardscape walking paths and shaded areas help define the campus’s character, but maintaining its natural beauty and functionality requires consistent care. Landscape Workshop is proud to provide professional landscaping services to meet these ends.
Landscaping for Lynchburg’s Hotels, Inns, and Bed & Breakfasts
On the list of commercial landscaping regulars, hotels and lodgings are always toward the top. Landscape Workshop caters to a variety of lodging-type businesses looking to fill rooms and beds. Whether modern or historic, these properties rely on landscaping to make the most of the space they occupy.
Lynchburg has the typical hotel found in any large American city, like La Quinta and Home 2 Suites, which may demand regular grounds maintenance and landscape installation. But Lynchburg also boasts unique hotels loved by locals and tourists alike. The Virginian Lynchburg is one such hotel. Part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, a hand-picked collection of upscale and luxury hotels based on character and personality, The Virginian Lynchburg is known for its charm, location, and long history. And while we also know it for all of those desirable traits, we know it better for its landscaping.
Located in the heart of downtown, The Virginian Lynchburg makes thoughtful use of its limited urban space. Its main entrances are lined with potted flowers and regularly accented with seasonal touches like pumpkins and wreaths. Between the sidewalk and the street, planting strips host ornamental grasses and low-profile shrubs.
Landscaping for Sporting Venues in Lynchburg, VA
Lynchburg, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, may not be the typical sports hub, but its sports presence is more robust than may be expected. The town features three main sporting venues: Bank of the James Stadium, Lynchburg City Stadium, and Vines Center for baseball, football, and basketball, respectively.
Bank of the James Stadium was previously called Falwell Field at City Stadium and plain City Stadium, and the teams that call it home have changed even more times. But one constant of the field, now run by the Lynchburg Hillcats, is the effort to make it inviting. The stadium has seen many restoration efforts over the past 100 years. Renovations in 1978, 1981, 2002, and 2005! These changes included additional seating, conveniences, clubhouses, and general repairs, but it also included the refinement of specific outdoor areas through hardscapes and lighting. Lynchburg City Stadium would eventually claim the old moniker of City Stadium, and it hosts football, and events on its storied field. Today, the stadium seats more than 4,000 fans and is home to the Lynchburg Hillcats, continuing its tradition of community-centered baseball.
Hospitals and Clinics in Lynchburg, VA
For hospitals and clinics, their presence can be very divisive depending on the visitor. Many people see health centers as a place of safety and healing, but, for others, it can stir feelings of death, illness, and fear. The key to assuaging these fears is through cultivating an environment that, instead, encourages calming and relaxing feelings. There are several hospitals in Lynchburg that use commercial landscaping to do that.
Centra Health is the predominant health provider in the area, and it owns many hospitals and clinics in the area like Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital. Virginia Baptist is a local hospital in northern Lynchburg, and landscaping there is focused around making parking lots and parking decks safer and inviting. Lynchburg General Hospital does the same, but it also features clean outdoor areas, especially for seating and helipads.
Lynchburg’s Weather Patterns and Their Impact on Landscaping
Lynchburg’s seasonal weather conditions are not too different from other neighboring communities, like Roanoke. Starting in spring, temperatures begin to rise in March, and they peak in late May around 79°F. Spring, to be expected, is fairly rainy, with an average of 3.5 inches of monthly rainfall. Summer heats things up with yearly highs around 87°F and lows of 68°F. The number of rainy days tends to stay consistent with Spring, but overall rainfall drops compared to Spring and Fall. As for Fall, temperatures begin to drop as low as 36°F by late November. Chances for rainfall also drop significantly during Fall. Winter, naturally, experiences the coldest months of the year with highs of 36°F and lows of 29°F. These dramatic drops can cause freezing in the early hours of days in January, so irrigation stops may be necessary. While these months see the least rainfall, up to 5.6 inches of snowfall is reasonable for the region, and most of the snowfall occurs during February.
Additionally, Lynchburg’s position in the Blue Ridge and Appalachian foothills make it susceptible to surface runoff, as frequent seasonal storms flow the rainfall down hill and into these flood-prone areas. For businesses in Lynchburg, proper irrigation and drainage are essential to not wasting commercial landscaping investments.
