The Color of 2020

Upcoming trends are often unpredictable, but one thing you are certain to see in the new year is the color blue. The Pantone Color Institute recently named “classic blue” the 2020 color of the year. According to color experts, the hue is a timeless choice that instills “calm, confidence, and connection.” In an effort to help you add a bit of tranquility to your outdoor space, we’ve rounded up some of the best blue flowers out there.

1. Iris: This tall, bright perennial loves sunshine and blooms in the summer. The six-petaled blooms form a unique silhouette and are known for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Named for the Greek Goddess of the rainbow, irises can be found in a wide variety of shades, but we find the blue especially beautiful.

2. Hydrangea: A true classic, this shrub produces large, showy flowers that bloom from spring through early fall. The shrubs can become quite large, making them an ideal plant for filling out your landscape. Some varieties change colors based on the composition of the soil. While alkaline soil will lead to pink blooms, acidic soil will achieve varying shades of blue.

3. Grape Hyacinth: Named for its resemblance to a cluster of grapes, this perennial bulb blooms in spring and brings a sweet fragrance with it. The small, hardy plant is easy to care for and will bloom a second time in the fall. We should note that adding this one to your property will take some patience, as the bulbs need to be planted in the fall.

4. Delphinium: The tall column of blue flowers found on delphiniums make them an elegant and eye-catching choice. They bloom in summer, and, while they can be high-maintenance, we think the results are worth it!
