The Intern Files | Rob Johnson
The Central Alabama branch has been pleased to work with Auburn student Rob Johnson this summer. Rob recently graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor’s of Environmental Design and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Landscape Architecture. He has spent a large part of the summer performing maintenance for The Summit, an outdoor shopping and entertainment destination. His mentor Jeremy Comer notes that Rob shows a strong interest in learning, is quick to take on responsibility, and is always up for a challenge.
How did you become interested in the green industry?
I have always enjoyed being outside and working in the yard, so getting paid for that seemed like a win-win.
Why did you decide to intern with LW?
I had a couple of classmates who had worked here or heard of it and said it was a good place for a summer job.
What is a “typical” day like?
Get up early, get to the truck I’ll be working on for the day, and then start the route for the day. We usually go to 4 or 5 different places, cut the grass and edge, and then clean up and move on to the next one.
What have you enjoyed most in your internship so far?
I enjoyed my time working in enhancements the most. The guys I worked with were great, and I learned a lot from it.
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned so far this summer?
For me, it was learning what is practical to expect for a landscape, whether it’s the amount of work going into creating it or maintaining it.
If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
I would choose being able to fly but only as long as I could go fast and not have to drive anymore.
